Topic: Miscellaneous 6:28 pm EST, Dec 26, 2005

A Blue Springs woman was taken to a hospital emergency room early today after a cell phone became lodged in her throat. The woman was in an argument with a boyfriend when the incident occurred, said Sgt. Steve Decker of the Blue Springs Police Department.Decker said police were told that the woman tried to swallow the telephone because she didn't want the boyfriend to have it. However the case is under investigation.Police responded to a call about a non-breathing person about 4:50 a.m. in the 3000 block of Southwest U.S. 40, Decker said. Police arrived and found that the 24-year-old woman was having trouble breathing. Her identity was not released. The woman was taken to the emergency room at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs. She still had the telephone in her throat upon arrival at the hospital, Decker said.A condition report was not available.

Connecticut Orders Lead-Laden Lunchboxes Off Store Shelves
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:47 pm EST, Dec 24, 2005

Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal has demanded that several lunchbox manufacturing companies and retailers remove lunchboxes containing lead from store shelves or face legal action.
Certain manufacturers and retailers have been distributing and selling lunchboxes containing lead -- one in particular with significantly higher lead levels than allowed under state environmental and consumer protection laws, Blumenthal's office said. The lead is found in the lunchbox liner - in the vinyl, where it is a commonly used stabilizer.

The Emile Berliner Gramophone....
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:51 pm EST, Dec  5, 2005

Invented in 1887 by Emile Berliner, the gramophone was a huge leap in recording technology, and "record disks" are still in use today! This kit allows you to build your very own gramophone, which will let you record and play back your very own record disks! Everything you need for the gramophone is included; you need only provide the labour and 2 size C batteries, cellophane tape, a Phillips' head ( ) screwdriver, and scissors. Use various materials as disks -- the lids from cup-noodle bowls, old CD-ROMs, plastic file folders, glossy paper -- see which ones work, and which ones don't! A fun experiment for the entire family!

omg! Use AOL cd's to record on like vinyl....

There Is No God By Penn Jillette
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:34 pm EST, Dec  1, 2005

believe that there is no God. I'm beyond atheism. Atheism is not believing in God. Not believing in God is easy -- you can't prove a negative, so there's no work to do. You can't prove that there isn't an elephant inside the trunk of my car. You sure? How about now? Maybe he was just hiding before. Check again. Did I mention that my personal heartfelt definition of the word "elephant" includes mystery, order, goodness, love and a spare tire?

So, anyone with a love for truth outside of herself has to start with no belief in God and then look for evidence of God. She needs to search for some objective evidence of a supernatural power. All the people I write e-mails to often are still stuck at this searching stage. The atheism part is easy.

But, this "This I Believe" thing seems to demand something more personal, some leap of faith that helps one see life's big picture, some rules to live by. So, I'm saying, "This I believe: I believe there is no God."

Having taken that step, it informs every moment of my life. I'm not greedy. I have love, blue skies, rainbows and Hallmark cards, and that has to be enough. It has to be enough, but it's everything in the world and everything in the world is plenty for me. It seems just rude to beg the invisible for more. Just the love of my family that raised me and the family I'm raising now is enough that I don't need heaven. I won the huge genetic lottery and I get joy every day.

Believing there's no God means I can't really be forgiven except by kindness and faulty memories. That's good; it makes me want to be more thoughtful. I have to try to treat people right the first time around.

Believing there's no God stops me from being solipsistic. I can read ideas from all different people from all different cultures. Without God, we can agree on reality, and I can keep learning where I'm wrong. We can all keep adjusting, so we can really communicate. I don't travel in circles where people say, "I have faith, I believe this in my heart and nothing you can say or do can shake my faith." That's just a long-winded religious way to say, "shut up," or another two words that the FCC likes less. But all obscenity is less insulting than, "How I was brought up and my imaginary friend means more to me than anything you can ever say or do." So, believing there is no God lets me be proven wrong and that's always fun. It means I'm learning something.

Believing there is no God means the suffering I've seen in my family, and indeed all the suffering in the world, isn't caused by an omniscient, omnipresent, omnipotent force that isn't bothered to help or is just testing us, but rather something we all may be able to help others with in the future. No God means the possibility of less suffering in the future.

Believing there is no God gives me more room for belief in family, people, love, truth, beauty, sex, Jell-O and all the other things I can prove and that make this life the best life I will ever have.

DUH!!! Cannabis 'doubles' fatal crash risk
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:20 pm EST, Dec  1, 2005

DRIVING under the influence of cannabis can double the odds of causing a fatal car crash and the risk increases if the drug is combined with alcohol, French scientists say.

Researchers from the French National Institute for Transport and Safety Research (INRETS) who studied 10,748 drivers involved in fatal car crashes from 2001-03, said about 7 per cent tested positive for cannabis and 21.4 per cent for alcohol. Nearly 3 per cent were under the influence of both.
"Driving under the influence of cannabis doubles, on average, the risk of being responsible for a fatal accident," Jean-Louis Martin, a co-author of the study, said.
In the British Medical Journal online, the researchers said men were more often involved in crashes then women.
They also tested positive more frequently for both cannabis and alcohol, along with younger drivers and people who used motorcycles and mopeds.

Although the prevalence of cannabis and alcohol among drivers was similar at about 2.8 per cent, the use of alcohol was associated with many more deadly car crashes.
The researchers also found that the more cannabis smoked or alcohol consumed, the higher the chance of being involved in a fatal accident

This is so stupid... I had to post. This is almost a fake news...
