National Day of Civic Hacking at the White House
Topic: Tech Industry 5:04 pm EDT, Apr  5, 2013

On the first weekend in June, civic activists, technology experts, and entrepreneurs around the country will gather together for the National Day of Civic Hacking. By combining their expertise with new technologies and publicly released data, participants hope to build tools that help others in their own neighborhoods and across the United States.

It's a great cause and we're excited to take part. On June 1, we'll welcome developers and tech experts to the White House for our second hackathon.

If you have the skills necessary to work with APIs and develop visualizations, tools, or other services that rely their data, we want to hear from you.

Topic: Tech Industry 5:07 pm EDT, Jul 20, 2012

The 18-year-old Taiwanese man named Chuang was found dead at an internet cafe. He had apparently been playing Diablo III for 40 hours without any food or sleep and had collapsed after the ordeal.

Chuang had checked himself into a private room in the café on the 13. An employee of the café found the man resting. When found him, Chuang managed to take a few steps before collapsing. He was pronounced dead soon after.

I wonder how many red bulls or coffee's this guy was drinking too.

Some Nexus 7 Already Plagued With Hardware Problems
Topic: Tech Industry 5:05 pm EDT, Jul 20, 2012

Many owners are complaining that their tablets' displays have begun to come apart from the bezel -- the adhesive seemingly isn't working correctly. Affected users are thus complaining to Google but are having difficulties getting anything resolved.

The second issue with the Nexus 7 is dead pixels. Owners are reporting that these black spots appeared after first boot, or shortly thereafter. Obviously there's no real fix for that, so customers who purchased the tablet directly from Google will find info on returns and exchanges here. The company will ask affected users to contact device support here.

I was planning on ordering one this weekend but think I will wait until they can resolve some issues.

With support from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and the Army Research Office, researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology are collaborating with scientists from four other organizations to develop new approaches for identifying these "insider threats" before an incident occurs. Apple cult mocked by Samsung in Galaxy S II ad
Topic: Tech Industry 11:46 pm EST, Nov 22, 2011

"I could never get a Samsung," says a self-consciously cool-looking, whiny dude, seated on the sidewalk. "I'm creative." "You're a barista," says the man standing next to him in line.

The mockery is part of a new ad for the Samsung Galaxy S II, which is a phone of which many might not have heard.

Why IT Jobs Are Never Coming Back - By Stephanie Overby, CIO
Topic: Tech Industry 11:18 am EST, Dec 12, 2010

The combination of more automation, increased offshoring, and better global IT infrastructure has taken its toll on the U.S. IT profession, resulting in a net loss of 1.5 million corporate IT jobs over the last decade, according to recent research from IT consultancy and benchmarking provider The Hackett Group.

The barely bright side for the American IT worker is that the total number of annual job losses will diminish slightly in the coming years, down from a high of 311,000 last year to around 115,000 a year through 2014, according to Hackett which based its research on internal IT benchmarking data and publicly available labor numbers.

Interesting interview and thought on the trend.

Microsoft employees hold funeral parade for iPhone, Blackberry
Topic: Tech Industry 5:07 pm EDT, Sep 11, 2010

I bet the Microsoft Zune and Kin teams feel so unloved.

---

Microsoft workers celebrated the release to manufacturing of Windows Phone 7 by parading through their Redmond campus on Friday with iPhone and BlackBerry hearses.

Employees dressed up in fancy dress and also modified cars to include Windows Phone branding. Aside from the crazy outfits the workers made fake hearses for giant BlackBerry and iPhone devices. Employees cheekily claimed they had buried the competition with Windows Phone 7.

Microsoft workers also performed a rendition of Thriller.
