Soy milk coming to school lunches? -
Topic: Health and Wellness 2:39 pm EDT, Oct 18, 2002

"The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, which promotes alternatives to animal use, claims that the school lunch program discriminates against minority students.
The USDA does not reimburse school districts for soy milk unless students provide a doctor's note demonstrating a medical need. The federally assisted lunch program requires that cow's milk be offered. "

Fried Twinkies a new state fair fave
Topic: Health and Wellness 11:13 am EDT, Oct 15, 2002

"LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (AP) -- In the South, where some joke that the four basic food groups are barbecued, baked, broiled or fried, state fairs are filled with booths that sell everything from corn on a stick to club-like turkey legs.

For dessert, an odd new treat has emerged: fried Twinkies.
Phil Dickson of Hot Springs has sold about 1,000 of the batter-dipped, deep-fried goodies topped with powdered sugar since the Arkansas State Fair opened Friday. "

US jeans maker Levi Strauss & Co. denied on Thursday it was playing on consumer fears by launching a line of trousers fitted with "anti-radiation" pockets for mobile phones.

The trousers, with a lining that the makers say shields against radiation, are designed by Dockers, a brand name of Levi Strauss--famous for its classic "501" jeans.

Beer may be good for you
Topic: Health and Wellness 9:32 am EDT, Aug 13, 2002

Here’s a good bar joke: Beer is good for you — even better for you than red wine.
After more than 20 years of research and scores of studies on the effects of moderate alcohol consumption on health, beer is slowly bubbling to the top as a beverage that not only lifts spirits but delivers protection against major ailments such as heart attacks, stroke, hypertension, diabetes and dementia.
The data seem so compelling that the National Beer Wholesalers Association, an Alexandria, Va., trade group representing the nation’s beer distributors, recently put on an oxymoronic sounding “health and beer” seminar and put out a press release that declared: “Eat right, exercise and drink a beer a day may be the way to keep the doctor away.”

w1ld: Ill drink to that. :)

Problem shots: Slicing
Topic: Health and Wellness 3:31 pm EDT, Jul 23, 2002

For right-handed golfers, a slice occurs when the ball starts left and finishes to the right of the target. It is caused by the club taking a very out-to-in swing path.

Slicing usually is the result of a weak grip. This is when both hands are positioned too far to the left on the handle of the club.
