"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"A little revolution, now and then, is a good thing." -Thomas Jefferson-

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

Regan says she was told to lie to protect Giuliani - Los Angeles Times
Topic: Media 1:00 pm EST, Nov 14, 2007

Former publisher Judith Regan filed a $100-million defamation lawsuit against Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. and other defendants Tuesday, alleging she was asked by company officials to lie to federal investigators in order to protect Rudolph W. Giuliani's presidential bid.

Well that wasn't something I expected. Not surprised by it, but didn't see it coming.

The uninvited guest: Chinese sub pops up in middle of U.S. Navy exercise, leaving military chiefs red-faced | the Daily Mail
Topic: War on Terrorism 8:52 pm EST, Nov 12, 2007

American military chiefs have been left dumbstruck by an undetected Chinese submarine popping up at the heart of a recent Pacific exercise and close to the vast U.S.S. Kitty Hawk - a 1,000ft supercarrier with 4,500 personnel on board.

By the time it surfaced the 160ft Song Class diesel-electric attack submarine is understood to have sailed within viable range for launching torpedoes or missiles at the carrier.

Yep, all that work to "free" Iraq, and what do we get? The Chinese telling us we can't even watch our own asses. The hard way.

Spending Look Eyed for Neil Bush Company | World Latest | Guardian Unlimited
Topic: Politics and Law 5:26 pm EST, Nov  7, 2007

The Education Department's inspector general says he will review whether federal money is inappropriately being spent on programs by a company founded by Neil Bush, the president's brother.

Whoops. Brother Neil is back. But wait, let's combine that with this

Former first lady Barbara Bush gave relief money to a hurricane relief fund on the condition that it be spent to buy educational software from her son Neil's company."

and now we're looking at the former first lady going under the gun for tax fraud (bad charitable donation, with money earmarked for her son's company making a useless product).

Nepotism is one thing. When it starts moving into what look like kickbacks and tax fraud, we've left simple incompetence behind. Neil got away with Silverado under Poppy's watch, now he's back under W's. The Corleone's aren't this successful.

CQ Politics | FBI Hoped to Follow Falafel Trail to Iranian Terrorists Here
Topic: War on Terrorism 12:31 am EST, Nov  7, 2007

Like Hansel and Gretel hoping to follow their bread crumbs out of the forest, the FBI sifted through customer data collected by San Francisco-area grocery stores in 2005 and 2006, hoping that sales records of Middle Eastern food would lead to Iranian terrorists.

The idea was that a spike in, say, falafel sales, combined with other data, would lead to Iranian secret agents in the south San Francisco-San Jose area.

THIS is how we're fighting the Global War On Terror. These are your, and my, tax dollars at work. This is... WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS??? Jesus Christ, enough with the inane police state! Enough with the sheer stupidity of these morons. Enough! They've stolen the phone records, stuck people in jails, sent people to be tortured in lovely vacations spots like SYRIAN JAILS, who we won't even talk to about the bogus GWOT, and now we're spending money to track... GROCERIES??? This is beyond lunacy.

Journalism.co.uk :: SoE: Google is hugely dangerous – claims Times Online editor
Topic: Media 12:19 am EST, Nov  7, 2007

"We absolutely can't afford not to be brilliant on Google News. I think Google is hugely dangerous.

"Its move into DNA is a massive threat. I wonder whether we will all start feeling that they are behaving a little bit too much like big brother," she said.

"The number one topic of conversation at News Corp is Google."

I think the key notation there is "News Corp." That would be Rupert Murdoch and Fox. I also think it juxtaposes nicely with MSNBC's move to the left as a counterpoint to Fox. This promises to be very interesting, and potentially devastating to Murdoch due to his position as a print monster (London Times, NY Post, WSJ, etc.).

DHS employee put on leave after wearing 'offensive' costume - CNN.com
Topic: Politics and Law 4:52 pm EST, Nov  6, 2007

The employee wore a striped prison outfit, dreadlocks and darkened skin make-up to the party hosted by Julie Myers, head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Myers was on a three-judge panel that originally praised the prisoner costume for "originality."

Hmmm... I suppose he could have shown up in Minstrel show blackface...

Sen. Leahy to Oppose Mukasey for AG - Politics on The Huffington Post
Topic: Politics and Law 4:33 pm EDT, Nov  2, 2007

The chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee said Friday he won't support Attorney General nominee Michael Mukasey, further undercutting his chances for a quick confirmation, because Mukasey hasn't taken a firm enough stand against torture.

Undercutting? No, try ending. With this, Mukasey won't get a single Democrat, and could lose Specter and maybe Chuck Grassley (the rest of the R side will go with the White House and Lindsey Graham).

"No American should need a classified briefing to determine whether waterboarding is torture,"

That pretty much sums up the problem.
update: Looks like Schumer and Feinstein may flip and hand this over to the liar in chief. Black day.

Illnesses prompt recall of Totino's and Jeno's frozen pizzas -- dailypress.com
Topic: Health and Wellness 6:30 pm EDT, Nov  1, 2007

So last night I go to the grocery store and restock the freezer. Less than 24 hours later I get sent this link:

General Mills Operations of Ohio is recalling an undetermined amount of Totino's and Jeno's frozen pizzas because the may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, according to an announcement Thursday from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety Inspection Service.

Son of a bitch! So much for my freezer...

TwinCities.com - Craigslist killings: Police say suspect Michael John Anderson left a trail of evidence
Topic: Society 3:50 pm EDT, Nov  1, 2007

The 19-year-old Savage man used craigslist to lure Katherine Ann Olson to his home for a fictitious baby-sitting job, then shot her in the back, according to the criminal complaint filed Tuesday.

They're currently not charging premeditation. I expect the grand jury to change that. Presuming he did it, here's to this little bastard having a short, miserable, life sentence to Stillwater State Penitentiary.

Sen. Kennedy Turns Against AG Nominee
Topic: Politics and Law 3:09 pm EDT, Nov  1, 2007

Bush said it was unfair to ask Mukasey about interrogation techniques on which he has not been briefed. "He doesn't know whether we use that technique or not,"

Whether we "use that technique" or not is not, and was not, the question. The question is, "Is waterboarding torture?" The answer is yes. W is a complete tool and I don't expect him to be able to figure that one out, and I think Mukasey declined to answer because he knows (just like everyone else in the world knows) that we have been doing it, and if we have been doing it (which we have) then Mukasey would be legally bound to start war crimes prosecutions.

I expect there will not be another AG under this administration. Anyone who would be offered the job is too corrupt to get through confirmation, and anyone with any integrity would never be nominated because they would immediately turn and bite the hand that fed them. Off.
