macosxhints - Configure Mail for Gmail POP access
Topic: Computers 10:54 am EDT, May 23, 2005

] Google recently started introducing free POP3 and SMTP
] e-mail access access to GMail users. However, their
] instructions for Mail were not very accurate, so I
] thought I'd share how to really get up and running with
] this new feature.
]
] Please note that not all accounts have POP3 access yet,
] as it has only been introduced to a handful of users. To
] see if your account is POP-ready, log in and look for
] "New Features!" in red on the top-right of the window. If
] it isn't, this hint won't be very useful to you.

Woah! Neat. I wasn't aware.

ABC7Chicago.com: Two students investigated for identity theft at high school
Topic: Computers 7:45 am EDT, May 16, 2005

] May 12, 2005 %u2014
] Criminal charges might be filed against two students for
] stealing personal information at a west suburban high
] school. The students at Hinsdale Central are accused of
] hacking into the school's computer system and obtaining
] Social Security numbers for students and staff.
]
]  ABC7 Video
] Hinsdale school officials say the accused students have
] had the Social Security numbers of their fellow students
] and teachers for months, but there is no indication that
] they have done anything with that information. Still,
] the school may take disciplinary action against the
] students, and criminal charges could be filed.

It's funny that they're considering disciplining the Hackers, but no one questions the school for putting their information at risk to begin with.

For some reason, I've been getting better results from Altavista lately than Google. Has google been concentrating so much in other areas lately that they're slacking in the search department?

] About Fliker
]
] Fliker is an image search engine and an inspirational
] tool. As you type and refine your search, you see results
] as quickly as your connection allows. Fliker is the
] fastest way of searching for images, all you have to do
] is concentrate on the images that flash in front of you.
] Because Fliker displays all the images in the same place
] you don't have to scan across rows of pictures or scroll
] down a web page. Fliker is also an inspirational tool, it
] dynamically reacts to your search terms as you type, so
] you receive exciting and unxpected results as you spell
] your searches out. For example searching for 'cartoon'
] would receive results for 'car', 'carts', maps ('carto')
] and everything inbetween.
]
] Using Fliker
]
] Search for images by typing search terms in the text box.
] If you see an image you like, hold down the left mouse
] button and scroll the mouse left and right to scroll
] through the images in the timeline. You can use the
] 'left' and 'right' cursor keys to scroll through the
] images one at a time. Release the mouse button or press
] the 'down' key to begin downloading the image to your
] copy/paste clipboard making it incredibly fast and easy
] to get the images that you want. When the image has been
] fully downloaded Fliker will tell you. You can then paste
] the image into any application.

Neat.

] Exclusive: Life at SuprNova.org
] posted Dec 28, 04 | 11:27 am
] A few days back we reported on a site that called the
] SuprNova.org shutdown a hoax. Well, it appears that the
] site, or its rumored project "Exeem", may be making an
] appearance.
] [more]
] An update recently posted to SuprNova.org's homepage...
] "It has been more then a week since SuprNova.org went
] down. We are sorry that we have not updated the site with
] more recent news, but we have been very busy.
] Anyway, we will soon be making an announcement.
] Announcement will be made on NovaStream.org radio on 30th
] December around 10 PM CET (9 PM GMT, 4 PM EST)."
]
] Back on the 1st of December, Slyck ran an article about
] SuprNova working on a project to decentralize BitTorrent.
] Well, this is it. The project was apparantly under heavy,
] yet closed-to-the-public beta-testing at the time of the
] site's closure, and due to recent MPAA action against
] many BitTorrent file sites, SuprNova has clearly moved
] onto Phase B... by ditching their central servers. Sounds
] like the torrent sites are going to be giving the movie
] companies even more of a headache now... yet this time,
] they're one step ahead.
]
] A quote from Slyck's article:
] "The BitTorrent tracker, similar to a central server, has
] been the great weakness of any P2P network. Although
] BitTorrent trackers do not operate identically to
] indexing servers, they still act like traffic cops -
] directing traffic to their intended destination.
] SuprNova.org, while not a tracker per se, still operates
] as a impromptu tracker as it points traffic to the actual
] tracker. Regardless, the bandwidth consumption remains
] enormous. This equates to prolonged searches, lengthy
] load times and other typical slow downs associated with
] the World Wide Web."
]
] Information will be posted as it's made available. Check
] back for more.
