The Bailout Round II: Adult Version?
Topic: Current Events 12:40 am EDT, Oct  1, 2008

Watching Dean Baker on CSPAN at the moment, visited his think tank's site, lots of interesting talking point memos.

With much of this equity now eliminated by the collapse of the bubble, many families can no longer sustain their levels of consumption. The main reason that banks won't lend to these families is that they no longer have home equity to serve as collateral. It wouldn't matter how much money the banks had, they are not going to make mortgage loans to people who have no equity.

And house prices are not going to come back. This is like Pets.com. We are not going to get the price of $200,000 homes in central California back up to $500,000.

...

How do we go about getting the banks in order? Almost every economist I know rejects the Paulson approach and argues instead for directly injecting capital into the banks. The taxpayers give them the money and then we own some, or all, of the bank. (That's what Warren Buffet did with Goldman Sachs.)

This isn't about begging for a sliver of equity as a concession for a $700 billion bailout, this is about constructing a bank rescue the way that business people would do it. We have an interest in a well-operating financial system. There is zero public interest in giving away taxpayer dollars to the Wall Street banks and their executives.

Somewhere Compy is crying. In hell.

Who would have thought the Poopsmith could sing so well?

PS: I call Jill the Poopsmith when its her night to clean the cat's litter box. In fact the entire process is described in our household as "poopsmithing."

Rendell: Palin doesn’t ‘have a clue’ - Andy Barr - Politico.com
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:38 am EDT, Oct  1, 2008

Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell dismissed Sarah Palin’s assessment that the country could be facing another Great Depression Wednesday, saying that the Alaska governor simply “didn’t have a clue” how to answer a question on the economy.

“She doesn’t give answers any more than Senator McCain does,” Rendell said on MSNBC. “The answer to that question is, we can avoid a Great Depression by doing things to stimulate the economy. And that’s one area where McCain and Palin have no ideas.”

“Governor Palin, in her response, didn't have a clue. She should have pivoted and said, ‘Well, the best way to avoid this becoming a depression is to jumpstart the economy, and here's how we're going to do it.’ They don't have an idea to jumpstart the economy.”

Nathan Road - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:32 am EDT, Oct  1, 2008

Nathan Road is the main thoroughfare in Kowloon, Hong Kong that goes in a south-north direction from Tsim Sha Tsui to Mong Kok. It is lined with shops, restaurants and tourists, and was known in the post-World War II years as the Golden Mile, a name that is now rarely used. It starts on the southern part of Kowloon at its junction with Salisbury Road, a few metres north of Victoria Harbour, and ends at its intersection with Boundary Street in the north.

Was In Hong Kong last week for business. Spent an afternoon walking through Kowloon and visiting the night market. Awesome trip and I'll post the photos to Smugmug soon. However I do recall seeing signs saying "Man's pleasure $360." Ahhh Asia...

Ancient Egyptian multiplication
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:28 am EDT, Oct  1, 2008

Peasant multiplication, or Russian peasant multiplication uses an algorithm similar to Egyptian multiplication.

* Write the two numbers (A and B) you wish to multiply, each at the head of a column.
* Starting with A, divide by 2, flooring the quotient, until there is nothing left to divide. Write the series of results under A.
* Starting with B, keep doubling until you have doubled it as many times as you divided the first number. Write the series of results under B.
* Add up all the numbers in the B-column that are next to an odd number in the A-column. This gives you the result.

Example: 27 times 82

Ran into this a reference to this from a paper on ALU design. Wild!
