Data Theft and Identity Protection

On Sunday, March 2 at 7:20 p.m., computer systems personnel at UT Austin discovered a computer malfunction. The affected computer system was immediately shut down, and detailed analysis was begun.

What happened?

The malfunction was assessed to be the result of a deliberate attack from the Internet. Subsequent analysis revealed that a security weakness in an administrative data reporting system was exploited by writing a program to input millions of Social Security numbers. Those SSNs that matched selected individuals in a UT database were captured, together with e-mail address, title, department name, department address, department phone number, and names/dates of employee training programs attended. It is important to note that no student grade or academic records, or personal health or insurance information was disclosed.

...

How many individual records were exposed?

Approximately 55,200 individuals had some of the above data exposed. This group includes current and former students, current and former faculty and staff, and job applicants.

washingtonpost.com: Cybermania Takes Iran by Surprise

TEHRAN -- Arash Fahimi is a teenager in a nation that frowns on dating, outlaws rock music and offers a 17-year-old almost no chance for travel beyond its borders.

But Fahimi, like hundreds of thousands of young Iranians, has discovered an escape from his cultural cocoon. Sitting at a computer terminal in an Internet cafe, he downloads the latest Western pop music hits and chats daily with cyber-acquaintances around the globe. He even found a girlfriend on the Internet.

"I want to have a better idea of what the world is like," said Fahimi, earphones clamped under a Nike baseball cap and fingers tapping out a chat room response on his screen. "If I can't make a trip abroad, the Internet is the best way."

grazulis - william s. burroughs - cutup machine
Topic: Technology 4:41 am EST, Mar  4, 2003

I have found that this cut up engine has some interesting properties. Properties which were probably not forseen or intended by the authors.

Use a mouse to drop a Requirements Document, as written by, say, a member of the Sales staff into the upper box. Then visit the CPAN site, grab a couple of relevant Perl modules and drop them into the bottom box. Activate the 'Cut It Up' button, grab the results, drop it in to your source code file and fire up the Perl interpreter. Voila! you now have a well structured Perl program which conforms to spec.

Sometimes you will have to try it a couple of times. It seems to work with Bugzilla reports, too. It doesn't seem to work with lisp since it has trouble keeping the parentheses balanced properly.

"They have a way of vouching for each other as friends, figuring out who to trust and not trust."

"Music a lot of times is the background for the fun that you have."

"In fact, word of mouth for music adoption is the most popular way for music to be adopted."

"As for the name, it is a takeoff on six degrees of separation, the theory that every individual on the planet can be linked to any other individual by six other people."

For "Net-genners," Microsoft learned that using the Internet for socializing is a way of life.

Computer Made from DNA and Enzymes
Topic: Technology 10:52 pm EST, Feb 24, 2003

Israeli scientists have devised a computer that can perform 330 trillion operations per second, more than 100,000 times the speed of the fastest PC. The secret: It runs on DNA.

A year ago, researchers from the Weizmann Institute of Science in Rehovot, Israel, unveiled a programmable molecular computing machine composed of enzymes and DNA molecules instead of silicon microchips. Now the team has gone one step further. In the new device, the single DNA molecule that provides the computer with the input data also provides all the necessary fuel.
