] above "integration or compromise." In January, the
] company had also said that a format war is not in

] the competing formats was not out of the question.

NY Times | Ecuador Lawmakers Vote to Remove Gutierrez
Topic: Miscellaneous 4:39 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2005

] QUITO, Ecuador (AP) -- Lawmakers in Ecuador voted
] Wednesday to remove embattled President Lucio Gutierrez
] from office after a week of escalating street protests
] demanding his ouster, and they swore in Vice President
] Alfredo Palacio to replace him.

Just got some interesting emails from my sister (who lives in Quito) about this. Apparently within 2 hours the President was thrown out, left the palace for Chile, etc.

This weekend she sent me email about how the President declared martial law, and then took the order back when it looked like the people might take advantage of it. The military dropped support for him this morning, after tear gassing rioters last night. Dropped support means "time to make a break for Chile".

New Scientist Breaking News - Computer generates verifiable mathematics proof
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:36 pm EDT, Apr 19, 2005

] The Four Colour Theorem, proposed by Francis Guthrie in
] 1852, states that any four colours are the minimum needed
] to fill in a flat map without any two regions of the same
] colour touching.
]
] A proof of the theorem was announced by two US
] mathematicians, Kenneth Appel and Wolfgang Haken, in
] 1976. But a crucial portion of their work involved
] checking many thousands of maps - a task that can only
] feasibly be done using a computer. So a long-standing
] concern has been that some hidden flaw in the computer
] code they used might undermine the overall logic of the
] proof.

Once again, coq to the rescue.
