Wipro's World-Class Ambitions
Topic: Tech Industry 4:27 pm EST, Mar 21, 2004

eWeek: What is your advice to a student considering studying engineering? Will there be a job at graduation?

Paul: "My view is that anyone who thinks that technology is done is just crazy. The amount of innovation yet to happen is mind-boggling. ... So, the question would be not what should I do as a student, but what are our government leaders doing to make sure the country will have a stable economy?"

eWeek: And your advice for the 40-year-old engineer here in Silicon Valley whose job has been outsourced?

Paul: "Make sure that you are quickly getting yourself into arenas that are, in fact, pushing the edge of innovation. If your job involves sitting in a cubicle and not talking to anyone else, you are at risk. Get yourself into a role that is more attached to the customers or suppliers and is on the cutting edge of innovation."

Are you feeling "boxed in" by your work environment?

Taiwan's President Survives Assassination Attempt
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:33 pm EST, Mar 21, 2004

On Friday, NPR's Rob Gifford reported from the streets of Taipei. This is some great reporting, and the audio engineering is top notch. The interviews are amazing. You can really feel the crowd.

Gifford: "You think he would fake his own shooting?"
Woman: "Right, because look at where he got shot. It's impossible, you know?"
Gifford: "That's quite a conspiracy theory."
Woman: "Right. I think it's a conspiracy."

Gifford (to another woman): "So, what are you saying? You're saying he faked the whole thing?
Woman: "Of course."

Shooting raises questions, provokes conspiracy theorists
Topic: Current Events 12:27 pm EST, Mar 21, 2004

Text messages were quickly circulating in Taiwan with questions about whether the shooting had been staged to gain a sympathy vote for the president.

Sisy Chen - a defector from President Chen's party who is now an outspoken foe - also noted that his security detail had visited the shooting scene and the hospital beforehand.

Presidential assassination is the new pop.

Get Out of My Namespace

You don't own your name. The world is running out of names. Rules are up for grabs.

"It's a kangaroo court. They seem to change the rules on the fly."

Drug companies spend millions on market research to make sure their names are both serious and sexy.

Occasionally, desperation can lead to brilliance.

In a complex world, the simplest words are the most oversubscribed.

"The more we stray into the territory of naming systems and geography, the more we realize the illogicality."

Cyberspace and globalization represent ... a sea change in the scale of modern society.

The vast majority of trademark applications used to be rejected; now the opposite is true.

Namespaces will collide. Let them.

Powell Tries to Reassure Saudis and Kuwaitis
Topic: International Relations 11:41 am EST, Mar 21, 2004

Powell sought to allay the furor, assuring the leaders of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait that there was no intention to impose reforms on their countries.

I sense slightly different foreign policy strategies emerging on this issue ...

The Europeans have also demanded that Pakistan and Afghanistan be removed as recipients of aid ... [saying that] labeling those two countries as part of a "greater" Middle East reflected ignorance and anti-Muslim bias.

Give it a name ...

When asked in Saudi Arabia whether the US would be satisfied if the Arab League adopted a democracy resolution, Mr. Powell bristled.

"It's not a matter of satisfying the United States."

"You are a slave, Neo. Like everyone else you were born into bondage, born into a prison that you cannot smell or taste or touch. A prison for your mind ...

Unfortunately, no one can be told what the Matrix is. You have to see it for yourself.

This is your last chance. After this there is no turning back.

You take the blue pill, the story ends, you wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe.

You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes ...

Remember, all I'm offering is the truth, nothing more ..."

You Cut the Head, but the Body Still Moves
Topic: War on Terrorism 11:29 am EST, Mar 21, 2004

What impact would the capture of Ayman al-Zawahiri have on America's campaign against Al Qaeda?

At this late date, the loss of Zawahiri and bin Laden will, in real terms, mean little to the network of Al Qaeda.

Perhaps some in Washington are already speculating whether it will be better to try to capture Mr. bin Laden, knowing that his death will guarantee his immortality.

It may be that in death both can achieve more real power than they ever wielded while alive.

Invoking Che, old Milt explains it all.

Software of Democracy
Topic: Society 11:18 am EST, Mar 21, 2004

"In this globalization of information technology and outsourcing, the beneficiaries will be those who are most flexible and able to organize themselves around the opportunities."

"Globalization is creating the affluent urban Indian who is ... not content with islands of affluence. [Because] it will be impossible for them to fully take advantage of the opportunities globalization is giving them without airports and roads and sidewalks ... And the only way they are going to get that delivered is if they get engaged in government."

If in fact there are two Indias, perhaps John Edwards can find work in one of them.

This November, somebody should hire call center employees in Bangalore for a get-out-the-vote campaign. That would be amusing.

John Kerry: Winning War on Terror Requires Reconsideration of Saudi Alliance
Topic: International Relations 11:36 pm EST, Mar 20, 2004

When a senior member of the Saudi ruling family -- its top law enforcement officer responsible for tracking down terrorists -- promotes wild, antisemitic conspiracy theories to explain away the September 11 attacks, it is time for America to look seriously at our relationship with Saudi Arabia and its reliability as an ally against terrorism.

It's time to put the American-Saudi relationship on a frank and balanced basis. Not surprisingly, the Saudi-friendly Bush administration has failed to get this point.

Saudi Arabia's support for Islamic extremism here and elsewhere is also well known.

The Saudi regime openly and enthusiastically supports Palestinian terrorist groups, such as Hamas.

[Bush] refuses to come clean on his administration's relationship with the Saudi royal family. Shortly after the September 11 attacks, when airplanes were still grounded, the White House allowed a Saudi charter flight to round up members of the bin Laden family and leave the country without time for an investigation.

As president, I will not stand by and allow America to be held hostage by Saudi oil. We can unleash the spirit of American ingenuity to meet this challenge.

So far, [Bush] has been unable and unwilling to stand up to the Saudi regime.

Strategic Framework Analysis
Topic: Society 7:23 pm EST, Mar 20, 2004

Strategic frame analysis is an approach to communications research and practice that pays attention to the public's deeply held worldviews and widely held assumptions. Recognizing that there is more than one way to tell a story, strategic frame analysis taps into decades of research on how people think and communicate.

Quite simply, framing refers to the subtle selection of certain aspects of an issue in order to cue a specific response.

This is reminiscent of the business plan for General Memetics Corporation, except that Framework Analysis lacks personalization and social network exploitation. Well, there's that, and the fact that Framework Analysis is meant to be a force for Good. But then, tools are value neutral, right?

Techno is the new Pop.

Geek War on Terror
Topic: High Tech Developments 6:11 pm EST, Mar 20, 2004

Two key questions: is the technology really good enough to catch bad guys on the spot, and is there any way to use this stuff without encroaching on civil rights?

Enter Jonas, who dresses in black, trains for Ironman races and thinks geek.

After 9/11, Jones served on a Markle Foundation task force and became engaged in the privacy problem. His response was to invent ANNA, a system that anonymizes data.
