Yahoo! News - WHAT IF WE HAD NOT GONE INTO IRAQ?
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:33 pm EDT, Sep 20, 2004

] Among the many people quoted in the Atlantic is Jeffrey
] Record, a professor of strategy at the Army War College,
] who summed up a good deal of the thinking in Washington
] now: "Are we better off in basic security than before we
] invaded Iraq? The answer is no. An unnecessary war has
] consumed American Army and other ground resources, to the
] point where we have nothing left in the cupboard for
] another contingency -- for instance, should the North
] Koreans decide that with the Americans completely
] absorbed in Iraq, now is the time to do something."

When the Army War College says one thing and the White House says the opposite, I think I'm going to have to go with the guys who have a clue. The Army.

Yahoo! News - U.S. Seeks to Throw Out Terror Convictions
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:54 am EDT, Sep  1, 2004

] In a late Tuesday night court filing, the department told
] U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen it supports the Detroit
] defendants' request for a new trial and would no longer
] pursue terrorism charges against them. The defendants at
] most would only face fraud charges at a new trial.

Now here's a strange case. For those who have been reading me in the past, they know I mentioned this case before, and there, the local prosecutors absolutely blasted the Justice Department for not only not providing help, but doing everything it seemed they could do to hinder the local office. What's next? Who knows.

A better question might be, why did they drag their feet eartlier and are now trying to throw out what was done? This sure doesn't sound like the sort of thing we expect from the Ashcroft Justice Department so what's the ulterior motive behind tossing this one which was originally touted as a great case in the "War on Terror?"

Nothing significant to this one, it's just funny.

Yahoo! News - Error Puts Kennedy on Airline No-Fly List
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:06 pm EDT, Aug 19, 2004

] Kennedy said he was stopped at airports in Washington,
] D.C., and Boston three times in March. Airline agents
] told him he would not be sold a ticket because his name
] was on a list.
]
]
] When he asked the agent why, he was told, "We can't tell
] you."

I think as far as the Bushies are concerned, if Teddy Kennedy can't get on an airplane, that means the system is working.

Yahoo! News - United Likely to Terminate Pension Plans
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:38 pm EDT, Aug 19, 2004

] Cash-strapped United Airlines said in a bankruptcy court
] filing Thursday that it "likely" will be necessary to
] terminate and replace its employee pension plans.

Just out of curiousity, I wonder what the top brass at United is paying themselves...

Yahoo! News - Ship-Sinking Monster Waves Are Widespread-ESA
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:13 pm EDT, Jul 24, 2004

] Three weeks of data from the early months of 2001 showed
] more than ten individual giant waves around the globe of
] over 80 feet in height.
]
]
] Previously, ESA said, scientists believed that such large
] waves occurred only once every 10,000 years.

Well they got that wrong, and HOLY CRAP!

Yahoo! News - France Accuses America Over HIV Drugs
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:43 pm EDT, Jul 13, 2004

] The Bush administration's five-year, $15 billion plan for
] worldwide HIV/AIDS prevention and treatment is modeled
] after a program in Uganda, which stresses abstinence,
] monogamy and condom use.

That's nice. Just say no didn't work here, but we think it'll work everywhere? Thanks guys, it appears anal sex is unsafe but shoving your whole head in is just fine.

Yahoo! News - Detainees May Be Moved Off Cuba Base
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:52 pm EDT, Jun 30, 2004

] "They didn't really have a specific plan for what to do,
] case by case, if we lost," a senior Department of Defense
] (news - web sites) official said on condition of
] anonymity. "The Justice Department (news - web sites)
] didn't have a plan. State didn't have a plan. This wasn't
] a unilateral mistake on Department of Defense's part.
] It's astounding to me that these cases have been pending
] for so long and nobody came up with a contingency plan."

What? The Bushies didn't have a plan? How is that unlike EVERYTHING ELSE they've done? Invade Afghanistan, no plan to actually catch/kill the people they're after. Invade Iraq, no plan for what to do after they get rid of Saddam. It seems to me this sort of half assed action is NORMAL for the Axis of Weasels. (http://www.thebushadministration.com/bush/)
