"I like your Christ. I do not like your Christians. They are so unlike your Christ" --Gandhi

"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." -Theodore Roosevelt

"In my lifetime, we've gone from Eisenhower to George W. Bush. We've gone from John F. Kennedy to Al Gore. If this is evolution, I believe that in 12 years, we'll be voting for plants." -Lewis Black-

"When you're born in the world you're given a ticket to the freakshow; when you're born in America you're given a front-row seat. And some of us in the front row have notebooks and pencils." -George Carlin

Tiger Woods Out For Season, Requires Knee Surgery: Report - The Huffington Post
Topic: Sports 1:23 pm EDT, Jun 18, 2008

Woods also said he suffered a double stress fracture of his left tibia while preparing to return to the PGA Tour last month, which forced him to miss the Memorial and was the source of his pain at Torrey Pines when he won the U.S. Open.

91 holes on a broken leg. I had respect for his skills, but DAMN! That's toughing it out.

Here's Our New Policy On A.P. stories: They're Banned - washingtonpost.com
Topic: Society 1:46 pm EDT, Jun 17, 2008

The A.P. doesn't get to make it's own rules around how its content is used, if those rules are stricter than the law allows. So even thought they say they are making these new guidelines in the spirit of cooperation, it's clear that, like the RIAA and MPAA, they are trying to claw their way to a set of property rights that don't exist today and that they are not legally entitled to. And like the RIAA and MPAA, this is done to protect a dying business model - paid content.

So here's our new policy on A.P. stories: they don't exist. We don't see them, we don't quote them, we don't link to them. They're banned until they abandon this new strategy, and I encourage others to do the same until they back down from these ridiculous attempts to stop the spread of information around the Internet.

Good.

U.S. abuse of detainees was routine at Afghanistan bases
Topic: War on Terrorism 1:36 pm EDT, Jun 17, 2008

Former guards and detainees whom McClatchy interviewed said Bagram was a center of systematic brutality for at least 20 months, starting in late 2001. Yet the soldiers responsible have escaped serious punishment.

Nope, we don't torture, nosireebob.

We did, we probably still do, and the people involved, especially the people who authorized it need to be stuck in a hole someplace they can clear brush. The kind you get shot trying to leave. Like Joliet federal penitentiary. Sorry Mr. Bush, you don't even have plausible deniability. Go to jail. Go directly to jail. Do not go to Crawford, do not become baseball commissioner. You have done more to destroy this great nation than any prior enemy, foreign or domestic, has ever managed to achieve.

Three more UI buildings start to flood | press-citizen.com | Iowa City Press Citizen

The hospital has begun a bus service from Cedar Rapids and a plane service from the Quad Cities to bring in essential employees. Vice President for Medical Affairs Jean Robillard said six employees used the plane service Saturday.

I lived in Iowa City during the '93 flood and it was a wreck. The numbers coming down are 93+5 feet. They're talking 3/4 of a billion in damage in Cedar Rapids with numbers yet to come in Iowa City. This is still getting worse.

High Court ruling may delay war crimes trials - Yahoo! News
Topic: War on Terrorism 12:55 pm EDT, Jun 12, 2008

The Supreme Court ruled Thursday that foreign terrorism suspects held at Guantanamo Bay have rights under the Constitution to challenge their detention in U.S. civilian courts.

Message to George and Dick. "Go fuck yourselves." Message to everyone, this was a 5-4 decision, the dissent core was Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Roberts. If you need another description on just how thin the margin is between America and a police state is, it's ONE vote.

November matters.

An ominous warning that the rapid rise in oil prices has only just begun - Home News, UK - The Independent
Topic: Current Events 3:01 am EDT, Jun 11, 2008

In a speech to the European Business Congress in Deauville, France, Mr Miller offered little prospect of relief. He warned that the world was experiencing a fundamental shift in energy prices that will end at a "radically new level. We expect that the oil price will approach $250 per barrel in the foreseeable future".

Welcome to the new world. It is time to fundamentally change what we're doing and how we do it.

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 06/09/2008 | U.S. seeking 58 bases in Iraq, Shiite lawmakers say
Topic: International Relations 1:06 pm EDT, Jun 10, 2008

Iraqi lawmakers say the United States is demanding 58 bases as part of a proposed "status of forces" agreement that will allow U.S. troops to remain in the country indefinitely.

Gee, who didn't see this coming? I love that they were originally called "enduring bases" so it wouldn't trigger the same connotations at permanent, but they are, and always have been. It's a good thing Georgie is doing his farewell tour of Europe now while he's still in office, if he tries to go back as an ex-head of state, he'll probably find himself in a jail cell.

06/05/2008 | Did Iranian agents dupe Pentagon officials?
Topic: War on Terrorism 6:50 pm EDT, Jun  6, 2008

The revelation raises questions about whether Iran may have used a small cabal of officials in the Pentagon and in Vice President Dick Cheney's office to feed bogus intelligence on Iraq and Iran to senior policymakers in the Bush administration who were eager to oust the Iraqi dictator.

If they did or not isn't clear, but as stupid as these guys are, it wouldn't surprise me.

Stocks fall sharply on surge in oil, jobs data - Yahoo! News
Topic: Current Events 6:10 pm EDT, Jun  6, 2008

Crude oil has seen a huge rebound this week after falling amid a drop in demand for gasoline. The jump continued Friday; light, sweet crude set a high of $139.12 in after-hours trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange after settling at $138.54, a gain of $10.75 in the regular session. The surge followed a Morgan Stanley analyst's prediction that crude would reach $150 a barrel by July 4; a decline in the dollar and fresh tensions in the Middle East added to crude's advance.

Think it'll really take that long? Pool time! My prediction for breaking $150 is... June 23rd. Enter now!

US issues threat to Iraq's $50bn foreign reserves in military deal - Middle East, World - The Independent
Topic: War on Terrorism 4:08 pm EDT, Jun  6, 2008

The cost to Iraq of this happening would be the immediate loss of $20bn. The US is able to threaten Iraq with the loss of 40 per cent of its foreign exchange reserves because Iraq's independence is still limited by the legacy of UN sanctions and restrictions imposed on Iraq since Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait in the 1990s. This means that Iraq is still considered a threat to international security and stability under Chapter Seven of the UN charter. The US negotiators say the price of Iraq escaping Chapter Seven is to sign up to a new "strategic alliance" with the United States.

Bush is learning! He's progressed from fights to blackmail!
