The Gender Genie
Topic: Technology 9:43 am EST, Dec  6, 2006

Inspired by an article in The New York Times Magazine, the Gender Genie uses a simplified version of an algorithm developed by Moshe Koppel, Bar-Ilan University in Israel, and Shlomo Argamon, Illinois Institute of Technology, to predict the gender of an author. Read more at nature.com.

One of the things that has always bothered me about the gaming industry on the systems side of things is how secretive all the companies can be about their products. Not about what they are up to in R&D, but what they actually have, right now. To me this means one thing: they aren’t innovating fast enough. If you have to defend the feature-set you’ve got right now with secrecy, then you are moving too slowly. After all, what does it matter if the competition knows what you’ve got right now if… you’ll have something new tomorrow? If you’re moving fast and leading the pack, then you’ll always be one step ahead. Thats why we’ll be telling you about all the new features of eMpower Lite Reporting right here. In this blog.

We would rather make our product known to all, and to get customers involved in the development process through open communication like this blog, than be secretive and closed. Because we’re an open company. Open minds using open source tools to bring solutions to an industry that is typically five to ten years behind the rest of IT.

I look forward to keeping you all updated with what Lucision is up to. We are very busy, and we hope you’ll stop by once in a while to see what we’re up to, and to let us know what you’d like to see in our software by commenting.

Here’s a look at our booth at G2E. The space was humble, but we like to think we filled it with enthusiasm, and a great product. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Your enthusiasm made our day, and your feedback was invaluable.

We've started a company blog to keep in closer touch with our customers, and the gaming industry in general. Please recommend this, sos we get better googlage :)

RE: 'Second Life' faces threat to its virtual economy | CNET News.com

Groups of Second Life content creators were gathering digitally Tuesday to protest the dissemination of a program they worry could badly damage the virtual world's nascent economy.

The controversy gathered steam Monday when Linden Lab, which publishes Second Life, posted a blog alerting residents of the virtual world to the existence of a program or bot called CopyBot, which allows someone to copy any object in Second Life. That includes goods such as clothing that people purchase for their in-world avatars, and even the virtual PCs that computer giant Dell announced Tuesday it is going to sell in the digital world.

Big problems in the virtual realm...

Replicators seem to function well in star trek... I gouess were're about to see a projection on how this might affect things.

'Evanescent coupling' could power gadgets wirelessly - tech - 15 November 2006 - New Scientist Tech
Topic: Technology 11:40 am EST, Nov 15, 2006

A phenomenon called "evanescent coupling" could allow electronic gadgets to start charging themselves as soon as their owner walks into their home or office.

Researchers have been looking for a way to make a wireless charger for some time. One idea is to use electromagnetic induction – passing an electric current through a coil to create a magnetic field that induces a current in a neighbouring coil.

This is the way devices like electric toothbrushes are charged, and has been proposed as the basis of a universal recharger pad before (see One charger pad could power up all gadgets).

The snag as far as mobile devices are concerned is that the charger and device must be in close contact with each other for it to work. Alternative schemes - for instance, transmitting electromagnetic waves in all directions to reach any device in a room - would be hugely wasteful.

Great. Now all we need is the Mecha.

RE: Samsung develops machine gun sentry robot costs $200k - Newlaunches.com

Samsung has partnered with Korea university and developed the machine-gun equipped robotic sentry. It is equipped with two cameras with zooming capabilities one for day time and one for infrared night vision. It has a sophisticated pattern recognition which can detect the difference between humans and trees, and a 5.5mm machine-gun.

Yet another milestone on the path toward robots that hunt, kill, and eat people, and use their flesh to generate electric power.

The future is about as bright as a muzzle flash.

The commercial is great. It makes me sure that kim jong il will have super ninja steal this weapon and CHUCK NORRIS and his Karate Kommando's will have to go get it back.

AnandTech: Apple's Mac Pro - Upgrading CPUs, Memory & Running XP
Topic: Technology 1:32 pm EDT, Sep 13, 2006

Later this year Intel will be introducing pin compatible upgrades to its Core 2 and Xeon lines, except instead of two cores these processors will feature four. Codenamed Kenstfield (Core 2) and Clovertown (Xeon), Intel's new quad-core processors will dramatically increase the amount of processing power you can have in a single system. Given that the Mac Pro features two LGA-771 sockets, you could theoretically drop two Clovertown processors in there and you'd have an 8-core Mac Pro.

LiveScience.com - Microbe and Machine Merged to Create First 'Cellborg'
Topic: Technology 2:09 pm EDT, Sep  7, 2006

Fully merging microbe and machine for the first time, scientists have created gold-plated bacteria that can sense humidity.

The breakthrough is the first "cellborg" in what might become an array of devices that could sense dangerous gases or other hazardous substances.

The bioelectronic device swells and contracts in response to how much water vapor is in the air. It’s called a cellborg humidity sensor, and it is at least four times more sensitive than those that are solely electronic. It even works even when its biological parts are long dead.
