Why the South Fell Apart in the Snow
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:55 pm EST, Jan 29, 2014

There's a simple explanation for that one, too. Birmingham is one of those cities that shuts down at the faintest hint of snow. Again, this isn't because we are rubes who wonder why God's tears have turned white and fall slower. It's because the city does not have the infrastructure in place to handle snow, and is self-aware enough to realize it. If you don't know how to swim, just stay out of the pool. Easy.

My favorite part is in bold :)

15 Myths The Media Should Ignore During Obamacare Implementation
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:31 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2013

Right-wing media have consistently hyped several myths about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) during the lead up to open enrollment for state-based exchanges. As media outlets report on implementation of the health care law, they should be aware of these false claims, including zombie myths that the law includes "death panels" and that Congress is "exempt" from the law.

Guess Who Pushed Hard For Obamacare Subsidies For Congress Before Using Those Subsidies To Shutter Government?
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:18 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2013

While Speaker Boehner apparently has no problem making the eradication of healthcare subsidies for Members of Congress and their staffs the straw that broke the government’s back, it turns out that it was Speaker John Boehner who was personally responsible for getting the government to agree to give Congress back the contributions to their healthcare in the first place!

The tea party created an existential threat to America, not Obamacare
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:07 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2013

By pretending that the Affordable Care Act poses such an existential risk to the republic that it merits dragging our national character through the mud of a government shutdown, tea party Republicans are belittling the very real crises America soon may face.

House Republicans probe DC monument closures amid shutdown
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:04 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2013

House Republicans are investigating the decision to close off the World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington after veterans groups were initially denied access to the memorial in what has become a defining symbol of the government slimdown's impact.

Senior Republicans on the House Natural Resources Committee sent a letter Wednesday to National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis asking him to retain all documents related to the "arbitrary" closures of open-air monuments and parks in the nation's capital. The committee is considering hearings to determine whether the Obama administration ordered the "outrageous" closures in an attempt to "make the current lapse in appropriations as conspicuous and painful to the public as possible," according to the letter from chairman Doc Hastings, R-Wash., and subcommittee chairman Rob Bishop, R-Utah.

Honestly I really wanted to use some of our national parks this weekend but that is the least of the problems here. People are out of work for no reason and they will not be able to feed their children or pay their bills

Marlin Stutzman and post-policy nihilism
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:25 am EDT, Oct  3, 2013

For many of us, to remember the last time Republicans shut down the federal government is to think of then-Speaker Newt Gingrich. Specifically, the far-right Georgian admitted in November 1995 that he closed the government in part because President Clinton hurt his feelings on Air Force One -- the president didn't chat with Gingrich during an overseas flight and then made the Speaker exit at the rear of the plane.

Really?

Topic: Miscellaneous 11:26 pm EDT, Oct  2, 2013

The U.S. government in July obtained a search warrant demanding that Edward Snowden’s e-mail provider, Lavabit, turn over the private SSL keys that protected all web traffic to the site, according to to newly unsealed documents.
The July 16 order came after Texas-based Lavabit refused to circumvent its own security systems to comply with earlier orders intended to monitor a particular Lavabit user’s metadata, defined as “information about each communication sent or received by the account, including the date and time of the communication, the method of communication, and the source and destination of the communication.”

Republicans often face criticism opposing Obamacare but having no plan to replace it.
So Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) has been tweeting about his replacement proposal: Let every American participate in the Federal Employee Health Benefits program.
"Federal employees have long enjoyed high-quality, affordable health care benefits through this free market, consumer based system," says Issa.

I am glad we are talking about it and offering solutions
