With Little Fanfare, an Anchor Says Goodbye
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:29 am EST, Nov 22, 2005

Leave it to Ted Koppel to quit "Nightline" in the same wry, superior way he began it 25 years ago. His choice for a valedictory broadcast is not a video scrapbook crammed with slow-motion clips and misty testimonials from world leaders. Nor is it a foreboding look forward at what network news will be like without him.

The show is a tribute to Mr. Schwartz's indomitable spirit, but the broadcast also serves as a veiled showcase for Mr. Koppel's proud, contrarian personality. He built his career on being different - professorial, not telegenic; cerebral, not entertaining; coolly amusing, not genial or avuncular. "A Tuesday With Morrie" tonight is Koppel's last chance on ABC to épater les bourgeois.

When Mr. Cooper asked Mr. Koppel why he was leaving ABC News, Mr. Koppel gave a dry smile and replied, "Why not?"

USATODAY.com - Breaking tradition, Carter rips Bush's policies
Topic: Miscellaneous 7:02 pm EST, Nov  3, 2005

He said the natural "arrogance" of second-term presidents is exacerbated by a fundamentalism under Bush that causes many of his supporters and those who work in his administration to believe that "I am right because I am close to God (and) anybody who disagrees with me is inherently wrong, and therefore inferior."

Carter acknowledged that both he and Bush proclaim their Christian faith as part of their governing philosophy, but the similarity ends there.

Questions
Topic: Miscellaneous 9:12 am EST, Oct 30, 2005

I wake up
The world is black
Are my eyes open?
Am I truly awake?
My ears are ringing
My head is pounding
There is silence
I can’t hear anything!
Will I ever hear again?
The room begins to spin
Or am I spinning?
I Scream!
Did anyone hear me?
Did I really scream?
I am in oblivion
Am I scared?
I can’t decide!
What a Rush

Someone recently requested that I post some more of these. This is an older one. Hope you enjoy it.

One percent of adults ages 20 to 64 now take the drugs, according to Medco, which administers pharmaceutical benefits for managed care companies.

Theraputic doses of stimulants is indeed preferable to cocaine abuse.

Maybe there is just nothing worth paying attention to for a lot of people. Let's just drug the nation, as long as they are paying into THE SYSTEM.

When people want to pay attention to things that they deam worthy of paying attention to, and can't... its a problem. For some people, a.k.a. those with A.D.H.D. there is a basic ability to focus and this seriously impacts their quality of life. For these people its such a problem that their lives are dramatically improved by stumulants. So yeah, drug em. Make em more effective human beings at whatever they do, be it squarish or subversive. Better living through chemistry.

To be honest, I've never met a well-informed person that actually believed that ADHD was a myth, a creation of a lazy or malformed society, etc. There's good science indicating differences in brain structures and function between typical and ADHD brains: MRIs, EEGs, PET scans, yadda yadda yadda. Its real. In the past these people were relegated to being fuck-ups and under-achievers, are much more likely to wind up in prison, abusing drugs, etc. Now we can do something about it. We should. Even if some people like to take whole LOT of these drugs, just for fun.

Yes it sucks to drug kids that can't pay attention to terrible public school lessons, and cubicle slaves that can't do their mind-numbing drone work. But fixing public schools and cubicle world are really separate issues to physical deficiencies in brain areas that impart selective attention.

Wow... rant triggered

Reuniting socks
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:57 pm EDT, Aug 13, 2005

Have you ever rifled through your socks drawer to find only three socks. One green, one blue and the other yellow? Where did the other one go? Unfortunately these lonely socks are usually thrown away like a piece of rubbish. :(

We're all too embarrassed to walk into Marks and Spencer and ask for one sock. This is the true motivation behind the site. To reunite socks with their long lost partners.

Such a noble cause

Press Release 4/31/2005 - Industrial Memetics Circles the Wagons
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:46 pm EDT, Jul 31, 2005

From the desk of the Acting CEO:

Its been a hectic few days here. Due to having to juggle several balls at once, I have not commented on this situation as much as I would like to. Due to how it could affect others, and the gravity of the situation, it is also necessary that I be careful with what I say.

Due to time constraints, I have not been able to put together a formal press announcement as I would have liked. In fact, this might not be the worst of times to mention two positions Industrial Memetics would like to fill:

CFO - We need someone to secure funding and manage our finances. Do not attempt to contact us unless you are serious about and capable of doing both. Experience working with technology companies and an understanding of the internet media and internet security space is required.

Corporate Communications / Business Development - Handle PR functions. Be able to take, arrange, and express information such as that in this message and turn it into press releases, and communicate it to interested parties and the press. Responsible for maintaining relationships with vendors and partners. Must be able to author basic HTML, be skilled at document creation, and have experience with negotiation teams as both a member and a leader.

Both positions have a starting pay rate of zero. I can be contacted by email at nick @at@ nicklevay.net.
