PAPER CLAIMS UK TORTURE
Topic: Current Events 9:48 pm EDT, Apr 30, 2004

More disturbing pictures have emerged about the alleged torture of Iraqi prisoners - this time at the hands of British soldiers.

The Army has launched a full investigation.

Photographs in the Daily Mirror show an Iraqi being battered with rifle butts, threatened with execution, and urinated on by British troops.

During his eight-hour ordeal, the suspected thief had his jaw broken and teeth smashed, the Mirror reported.

The news follows the publication of images showing US troops humiliating and torturing Iraqi prisoners.

The Mirror told how the suspect was later driven away from the Army camp, still hooded, and thrown off the back of a moving wagon.

...

The recently exposed torture by some soldiers doesn't appear to be limited to just American coalition members.

There were some other graphic pictures of someone beaten and left for dead. It's questionable whether the prisoner was already dead.

And I've heard the right wing chime in, about how although wrong, this treatment was not to the same extreme as what Saddam did to his own people or that other nations do to their prisoners. But the point seems to be lost. Americans and American soldiers are supposed to rise above this behavior.

But again, people will continue to believe what they want. This has already been sloughed off as hype and exaggeration by the ones that really need to understand it. They don't see this behavior as treason, which is exactly what it is.

Canada has better healthcare, eh?
Topic: Society 11:09 am EDT, Apr 24, 2004

MONTREAL (CP) - A 21-year-old man died of appendicitis after he was refused treatment at an emergency clinic because he didn't have his provincial health card with him.

Gerald Augustin complained of stomach pains on Thursday but the receptionist at the St-Andre medical centre told him he had to return home to get his health card. He didn't make it back to the clinic in Montreal's east end.

...

Rouslene Augustin, administrator at the St-Andre clinic, said the man didn't appear to have any urgent symptoms when he came to the clinic.

"If this guy was an emergency case, we would accept him if he had his card or not," she said.

...

American ERs, for all their faults, have to take you anytime. I guess Canada is great though, if you have your card.

MetLife sells Sears Tower
Topic: Current Events 4:31 pm EDT, Apr 20, 2004

The buyers, the source said, are Lloyd Goldman, Joseph Cayre and Jeffrey Feil. The same men also were named as the buyers by the Slatin Report, a Web site covering New York real estate. All are prominent but secretive Manhattan landlords.

Goldman and Cayre joined with Larry Silverstein in buying the trade center lease for $3.2 billion months before the twin towers were destroyed in the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

...

Many Chicago brokers were astonished by the swiftness of the sale, which occurred without MetLife taking competing bids. Brokers said the Sears Tower "offer book'' hit the streets only a couple of weeks ago.

"Somebody came in with a pre-emptive bid. It must have swept them off their feet,'' one said.

...

This will be interesting to watch. Wonder if the next terrorist attack is scheduled to be in Chicago? Watch for abnormal stock trades like there were immediately before 9/11. And watch out for employees of "MOving SyStems incorporAteD" with videos of Chicago showing zoomed in pictures of the Sears tower. More about that here:

http://www.zwire.com/site/mercury_101801.html

That article doesn't explicity state the nationality of the folks who were detained, opting instead for the general "Middle Eastern." There are a few other articles that delve into it though. They were most likely Israeli. From American Free Press:

The Mercury did not identify the men’s nationality, but their names were Moshe Elmakias and Ron Katar.

“Moshe” is a Hebrew name which is not likely to have been bestowed on a Muslim or an Arab.

A woman named Ayelet Reisler, in their company, was also detained. She had a German passport in her name and medication in a different name.

The two men worked for a company known as “Moving Systems Incorporated”—which is intriguing because AFP’s report of Oct. 1 revealed several suspected Israeli intelligence operatives seized by the FBI in the New York area after filming the World Trade Center disaster from at least two venues also purportedly worked for moving companies.

Supporters of Israel suggest that it is “just a coincidence” that several different groups of Israelis in the United States—some of whom are definitively connected to Israeli intelligence—would be working for moving companies and also have detailed videos of the WTC disaster and the Sears Tower, a potential terrorist target.

...

In a world where you ask people how many skyscrapers collapsed on 9/11, and most people say "two," it's hard to get them to realize there were Israelis detained in New York, posing as Arabs, filming the carnage and celebrating. Their cover was working for a moving business. In each case though, NY and Chicago, those detained were quietly deported. Thanks US government, thanks for all the hard work you do with domestic terrorist suspects.

Regardless of all the potential for conspiracy here, this purchase could just be smart business. Buy low (when people have terrorism jitters) and sell high (jack the rent when the fear subsides.) Or, just taking a wager that Chicago is next and then collecting the windfall. Interesting stuff.

Looks interesting. I've always wondered why Hussain al-Hussaini (John Doe #2) was swept under the rug. Of course, if this book is going to deal with unanswered questions about the OKC bombing, they need to touch on a few: The two unexploded bombs that were found inside the building and defused by police. The statements from some ATF agents and other officials who worked there, that they were given warnings to be out of the building that morning. The seismographic evidence that showed explosions prior to the truck bomb explosion. The witnesses who heard multiple explosions.

I think logic would dictate, with the bad press over Iraq, that if Iraq really was behind WTC '93, OKC and WTC '01 they would be waving it in our faces daily to trumpet the war effort. They tried, by mentioning 9/11 and Iraq in the same sentence for months, to affect the Pavlovian conditioning of the two. Ultimately though, Bush and Rumsfeld both have stated Iraq had no hand in 9/11.

10 Worst Album Covers of All Time
Topic: Humor 7:38 pm EDT, Apr  8, 2004

A friend of mine sent me a link the other day that has kept me entertained with what has become my first top ten list. I guess “bottom 10” would be more appropriate, since it goes from “really bad” to “crime against humanity”. The problem with the original website featuring these album covers (Kersbergen has redirected his traffic to this site after his server got all gummed up) is that they were in no particular order and no one wrote any captions. I plan to fix that. Aside from that, I thank the person who gathered and compiled these works of art.

Let’s get down to business, shall we?
