NICK BERG: STRANGER AND STRANGER - A.N.S.W.E.Rs ANYONE?

This is an issue I've tracked for a couple of years. The voices are growing. It's kind of like when one person says something contrary to popular opinion, you just laugh it off. Then more people start saying, "Hmm, well you know they might be on to something," Those that choose to ignore it will plug their ears as the voices grow.

The truth is, we are going to run out of cheap fossil fuels in our lifetimes. Our way of life is going to change dramatically very soon, within decades. Once oil production peaks, it's all downhill, literally, as we ride the downslope of the bell curve.

This page has a really good collection of starting points and quotes. I'm reading one of the books that is quoted here, "The Party's Over." It's doesn't paint a pretty picture of things to come.

Understanding how oil production affects what we have all come to accept as our way of industrial life, it underscores every war we are going to be fighting in the Middle East from here on out.

I'm curious to know, how many of you think this is even an issue? Is the talk of "peak oil" just Bravo Sierra or is it prophecy? It makes sense to me. I'm not in the camp that thinks it is just going to work itself out, not without readjusting to pre-industrial population size.

One of America's basic principles is the assumption of innocence until the proof of guilt. If we are supposed to be bringing democracy to Iraq, I would expect those principles to be upheld.

This Senator tiptoes around the fact that there are detainees in Abu Ghraib who are not guilty of any crime. He said "Many of them probably have American blood on their hands." 'Many' and 'probably' are subjective. They can mean anything.

If we are going to roll back the clocks to Spanish inquisition tactics, let's just fold now and quit calling America a democracy. Be aware though that a government willing to use torture against the civilians of a foreign country has the moral capability to use that same torture against its own population.

I think his statement is reasonable. As the owner of these stations it is Sinclair's choice to make. They obviously have a strong conviction about it. It remains to be seen how balanced the alternative programming Sinclair airs will be. If they truly do offer such a program, I commend them for sticking to their word. We'll see.

I agree that ABC is going to use this to send a message. It is no coincidence that they are broadcasting this on the eve of the anniversary of the end of "major combat operations." That the insurgency happened this month and the news of coalition torture of Iraqis is hitting will only serve to soften where ABC was going to put the dagger anyway. I have no doubt this was planned for April 30th for a long time. As much as I lean to the left, I have to side with Sinclair in principle on this one.
