Wired News: Orrin Hatch: Software Pirate?
Topic: Society 11:24 pm EDT, Jun 19, 2003

] Hatch on Tuesday surprised a Senate hearing on copyright
] issues with the suggestion that technology should be
] developed to remotely destroy the computers of people who
] illegally download music from the Net.
] The senator's site makes extensive use of a JavaScript
] menu system developed by Milonic Solutions, a software
] company based in the United Kingdom. The
] copyright-protected code has not been licensed for use on
] Hatch's website.
]
] "It's an unlicensed copy," said Andy Woolley, who runs
] Milonic. "It's very unfortunate for him because of those
] comments he made."

] A spokesman in Hatch's office responded, "That's ironic"
] before declining to put Wired News in contact with the
] site's webmaster. He deferred comment on the senator's
] statement to the Senate Judiciary Committee, which did
] not return calls.

Oh f'ing HYSTERICAL! "Pot calling the kettle black"? I hope this makes the big media channels to show what a hypocrite he really is.

Yep. But if men never had them in the first place, it would be scary to imagine a man WITH nipples... just like its scary now to picture a man with double D's! :Pu

FOXNews.com | Bill O'Reilly still an idiot
Topic: Society 12:30 am EDT, Jun 17, 2003

] The reason these net people get away with all kinds of
] stuff is that they work for no one. They put stuff up
] with no restraints. This, of course, is dangerous, but
] it symbolizes what the Internet is becoming.

Becoming? I guess Bill thinks the free press (free expression?) is a dangerous thing..

] So all over the country, we have people posting the most
] vile stuff imaginable, hiding behind high tech
] capabilities. Sometimes the violators are punished, but
] most are not. We have now have teenagers ruining the
] reputations of their peers in schools on the Internet.
] Ideologues accusing public officials of the worst things
] imaginable. And creeps gossiping about celebrities in
] the crudest of ways.

How is this the fault of the Internet? Would Bill have us start to place limits on speech on the net?

Bill is angry about "word of mouth". "Word of mouth" pre-dates the Internet by thousands years. Its just grown more powerful and attained further reach due to the recent advances of information technology. Much in the same way it did because of the telephone, mail service, etc.. If this is a bad thing, then our human ability to communicate is a bad thing..

Do we need to return to the old arguments about "right to reply" and "equal time"? Europe seems happy to do so.. A mistake we made in the US for awhile, before we came to the conclusion that the entire concept was flawed..

] The Internet has become a sewer of slander and libel,
] an unpatrolled polluted waterway, where just about
] anything goes. For example, the guy who raped and
] murdered a 10-year old in Massachusetts says he got
] the idea from the NAMBLA Web site that he accessed from
] the Boston public library. The ACLU's defending NAMBLA
] in that civil lawsuit.

Is NAMBLA the problem? Or the web? Oh! Its the web! Thanks for clearing that up Bill!

Oh yeah, and the ACLU is also bad.. Couldn't have one of his rants without shit talking the association who's mission it is to protect our civil liberties..

See a common thread here? A gross mis-understanding of what freedom of speech means? Its not freedom of speech if only the people you think should be allowed to talk, can talk.

] So which is the bigger threat to America? The big
] companies or the criminals at the computer?
] Interesting question.

Take note, what brought this on was someone saying something about Bill that Bill didn't like. As the story goes.. The San Francisco Chronicle posts a story with an error, blogs link to story, Bill gets pissed at blogs. Now we have this Talking Point's memo, where he is pretty much suggesting that speech on the net should have limits. This is bullshit of the highest order.

Bill seems to think that the only speaking should be done from the top of the ivory tower.. An opinion that seems to be common in the big media circles..

This guy is really dangerous.

BBC NEWS | World | Africa | Africa 'needs anal sex awareness'
Topic: Health and Wellness 3:35 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2003

] A study published in The Journal of Sexually Transmitted
] Diseases and Aids claims awareness of the risks posed by
] anal sex is ignored in many of the continent's health
] campaigns.
]
] However, HIV experts reject the findings, maintaining
] that vaginal sex is the main route of transmission for
] the Aids virus.
]
] The study by researchers at the University of Tuebingen
] in Germany proposes that anal sex, both heterosexual and
] homosexual, is the second biggest cause of HIV
] transmission in Africa.
]
] They say there is a presumption that anal sex simply does
] not happen in Africa and many educational programmes have
] therefore neglected to cover what they call an
] "embarrassing topic".

First off, it seems odd to hear the phrase 'anal sex' in the news.

But this story really does need more attention than a Beavis-and-Butthead chuckle. In the sidebar, it mentions this fact:

"There are 42 million people in the world living with HIV or Aids. Seventy percent of them are in sub-Saharan Africa, where Aids has already killed more than 14 million people. The overall infection rate in the region has stabilised, but the number of deaths each year is expected to rise further."

14 MILLION. And just under 30m of the 42m with the disease on the entire planet are on one continent. However, if you look at the "Success Story" sidebar, it notes that aggressive safe sex campaigns have lowered the HIV prevalance (in females) in Uganda from 27% in 1992 to 9% in 2000 - so it's not a lost cause. But the current governmental administrations need to understand that these kinds of programs need to be supported in African countries, and not to cut funding to overseas programs because of any pro-life/pro-choice stances. Cutting funding to these programs means that people will die - and that's not very pro-life, is it?

] While most people are familiar with the black boxes in
] aircraft, which also serve as event data recorders, few
] motorists know there are similar devices in their
] vehicles as part of the system that controls air bags.
] Only 36 percent of the 38,000 people surveyed by the
] Insurance Research Council were aware of EDRs.
]
]
] But at least 10 million vehicles have them, estimated
] Philip W. Haseltine, president of the Automotive
] Coalition for Traffic Safety, a lobbying group in
] Arlington, Va.
]
] The most sophisticated EDRs collect pre-crash information
] including the speed of the vehicle, whether the driver
] was accelerating or braking and whether the seat belts
] were buckled.
]
] The collection of such information has excited a wide
] range of groups for different reasons, and EDRs have the
] potential to become one of the more controversial issues
] in the auto industry.

I'm not sure how I feel about this. On the one hand, I don't want my every (driving) move recorded. On the other hand, maybe people will start to realize that they're accountable for what they do in their vehicles. The story this guy is about, who was doing 114 in a 30 and killed two girls, makes me lean toward the accountability end. But coupled with a GPS and suddenly every move you make is recorded. Now that's scary.

Research aims to save manatees using tech
Topic: Miscellaneous 2:40 pm EDT, Jun 16, 2003

] Researchers believe manatee voices could help them
] develop a visual warning system that would reduce the
] number of sea cows killed and injured by boats.
]
] Deke Beusse, a University of Florida veterinarian who
] heads the Marine Mammal Medicine Program, has performed
] experiments using hydrophones underwater listening
] devices at Homosassa Springs State Wildlife Park
] in Citrus County.
]
] The research was prompted by the soaring number of
] boat-related deaths, which reached a record 95 last year.
]
] "We thought if we could pick up the sounds of manatees,
] we could warn boaters of their presence," Beusse said.
] "When we played it back, they started vocalizing more
] %u2014 three times as much as normal and
] approached the speakers."
]
] Beusse hopes that in the wild, speakers can be placed in
] channels, where they would prompt and intensify manatee
] vocalizations.
]
] "The sounds would send a signal to a beacon that would
] begin flashing, letting boaters know they're there," he
] said. "Boaters wouldn't have to put anything on their

American History Documents: The Hyde Park Declaration of 1941
Topic: Technology 3:59 pm EDT, Jun 15, 2003

] Among other important matters, the President and the
] Prime Minister discussed measures by which the most
] prompt and effective utilization might be made of the
] productive facilities of North America for the purposes
] both of local and hemisphere defense and of the
] assistance which in addition to their own programs both
] Canada and the United States are rendering to Great
] Britain and the other democracies.

Random footnote in history. This is the actual legal document upon which the notion that cryptography can be freely exported to Canada without a license is based. This decision was made in 1941 in order to make the war machine more efficient, it works both ways, and generally applies to any kind of munition. It was never amended after the war. (Much like income tax withholding. :) )

Silicon.com - Sex.com returned to its rightful owner
Topic: Miscellaneous 1:04 am EDT, Jun 15, 2003

] Sex.com, widely believed to be the most valuable URL in
] the world, has been returned to its rightful owner after
] a six-year custody battle.
]
] The US Supreme Court has rejected the appeal of
] cyber-squatter Stephen Cohen who had been using the
] domain name as the flagship product in an online porn
] empire which made him his fortune.
]
] It is believed that the sex.com site brought in around
] $500,000 per month in advertising.
]
] However, Cohen acquired the domain through unfair means
] when he wrote a letter to registrar Verisign asking it be
] signed over to him, and transferred from its original
] owner Gary Kremen, who had the original foresight to
] register the name.
]
] Kremen, outraged at Verisign's compliance with this
] request, then embarked on a lengthy legal battle to
] regain control of the domain.
]
] However, Cohen's failure to overturn a $65m damages award
] is far from the end of the story. Cohen is holed up in
] Mexico and appears to be understandably loath to re-enter
] the US and honour the pay award to Kremen.

Proof that pr0n hawkers are scumbags.
