Refugee (Bio of a Space Tyrant, Vol 1) by Piers Anthony
Topic: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Literature 11:24 pm EDT, May  6, 2002

Following on the recent George R.R. Martin recommendation here is a sci-fi series with a similar feel. Piers Anthony, better known for his light Xanth fantasy series, spins an emotional yarn with twists that are difficult to predict. One novel will end leaving you distraught while another ends on glorious upbeat note. Be prepared to have your heart strings tugged as you are sucked into a space opera with serious plot twists.

[ Note - Apparently this is out of print! Hustle on down to your local used book store! -Rek ]

What an amazing author! I have never read anything like this before.. Tolkien move over! Unlike many fantasy series' out there, this one is totally unpredictable and very 'in your face'. Go forth and read!

[ I'm not sure I can quite go with the 'Tolkien move over', but without a doubt George R.R. Martin spins one of the most impressive fantasy (and even Sci-Fi) tales I've ever read. It's definite must read. -Rek ]

Why free online books are good.
Topic: Sci-Fi/Fantasy Literature 10:06 pm EDT, Apr 17, 2002

"Jim Baen and I set up the Free Library about a year and half ago. Leaving aside the various political and philosophical issues, which I've addressed elsewhere, the premise behind the Library had a practical component as well. In brief, that in relative terms an author will gain, not lose, by having titles in the Library.
What I mean by "relative" is simply this: overall, an author is far more likely to increase sales than to lose them. Or, to put it more accurately, exposure in the Library will generate more sales than it will lose.

...

What the Free Library provides-as do traditional libraries, or simply the old familiar phenomenon of friends lending each other books-is a way for people to investigate a new author for free, before they plunk down any money.

...

The purpose of this essay is to demonstrate that, based on FACTS."
