A Tower in Oz to Touch the Sun
Topic: Miscellaneous 12:02 pm EDT, Sep  6, 2002

"Last week the Australian government added its support, but no cash, to a hugely ambitious renewable energy project: the 1 kilometer-high solar tower.

The project is a solar-generated wind farm on a massive scale. It works on the principle of convection -- hot air rises -- and the tower functions like a chimney. "

This is a crazy engineering effort. Follow the link for the project on this page for an artist's conceptualization. Only in Austrailia (or possibly Canada) could you find seven kilometers that no one is using upon which to build the worlds largest structure.

The Simulation Argument
Topic: Miscellaneous 5:02 pm EDT, Sep  3, 2002

"This website features scholarly investigations into the idea that you might literally be living in a computer simulation. Films like The Matrix and novels like Greg Egan's Permutation City have explored the idea that we might be living in virtual reality. But what evidence is there for or against this hypothesis? And what are the implications? The original paper featured here, "Are You Living in Computer Simulation?", presents a striking argument showing that we should take the simulation-hypothesis seriously indeed, and that if we deny it then we are committed to surprising predictions about the future possibilities for our species.

...Nick Bostrom, PhD, is a Lecturer at the Department of Philosophy at Yale University."

There is no spoon.

[[ MemeStreams ]] Reputation Agent
Topic: Miscellaneous 11:25 pm EDT, Sep  1, 2002

The reputation system in the agent now has two new modes:
Recs/Noise and Clicks/Noise

I think these ratios are a more accurate reflection of real reputation. They'll help you keep track of users who make rare but useful recommendations. I'm still defaulting to total recommendations. One reason is that people with a very high signal to noise ratio probably don't post often... Tell me how well they work out for you.

Note: You CANNOT artificially inflate your signal to noise ratio by deleting old recommendations.

The MemeStreams CafePress store is now open for business. I initially told everyone not to use this store because the factory image I had was a little blurry. Although some people had advised me that you wouldn't be able to tell on a t-shirt, I wanted to get one of the shirts and be sure. Unfortunately, that initial image did end up looking blurry on the final shirt. So I got the images cleaned up. These are very crisp. They should look great. I feel confident about opening the store now.

Have fun...

"State Rep. Ronnie Davis was arrested Friday on federal conspiracy charges in an alleged scheme to get diplomatic passports for people who did not qualify for them...

Davis and Diana Dorothy Burton of Murfreesboro are charged with conspiracy to defraud two Beaumont, Texas, residents -- Dr. Glen G. Guillet and Robert Littell -- by giving them regular U.S. passports that had been altered to looked like diplomatic passports in exchange for $100,000. "

"Do you want an original and dynamic logo, designed at a reasonable price? "

I want to plug these folks too. They cleaned up the MemeFactory image used in the cafe press store (which will be open soon...). Whats more, they did it on a Saturday with no notice at a very good price. This is definately a good place to turn for your business graphics needs.

Nashville Area Colocation and Rackspace
Topic: Miscellaneous 10:22 pm EDT, Aug 31, 2002

"ICG Link, Inc. provides colocation and rackspace for Nashville area clients in our cabinets at the Nashville Inflow data center where you will appreciate the highest security and most reliable network connectivity available."

I'm getting my colocation from these folks. Figured I'd give them a plug. They are reselling inflow in a form thats attractive to sites like mine that don't require half a rack. I think you'll notice that the speed of the site is greatly improved despite the fact that its on a computer which is about half as powerful as the one it was previously hosted on. The reason? Time Warner Telecom's backbone is over-subscribed.
