Be careful if you get the 'drive by' check letter from State Farm
Topic: Home and Garden 4:33 pm EST, Nov  6, 2008

A few weeks ago we got a letter from State Farm that they were going to be driving by our home and taking pictures, not to worry, it was just a standard check.

So we didn't worry. Well, I suppose we should have worried, because there is no way their drive-by could have been JUST a drive by. See, we live up on a hill, and most of our yard is fenced in.

Today, we got a letter that they were dropping our coverage if we did not do certain things. One was that we are to remove all personal property from our yard and porches. The second, was that we are going to have to remove the ladder from our pool.

Our pool is behind the fence, and has been covered for 2 months now. The offensive ladder goes from the deck down into the pool and cannot be seen unless you get behind our fence, go to our pool, remove our pool cover, and look.

I was upset. I complained to a friend. She said that her son had got a similiar letter because he had a single loose piece of fleishing(sp?) on his roof, and that she knew someone that just had their policy terminated and got a refund of their premium because they found a trampoline in their yard.

I've never heard of such. We've had this home for 16 years now and have, in all that time, never filed a single auto or home insurance claim. Never. We are so private that I doubt we ever WOULD unless we had very serious property destruction.

So just...thought I'd warn folks that a 'drive-by' letter obviously means they are coming to snoop around and get in your stuff.

Freeby and Some Good Cooking Education!
Topic: Home and Garden 4:20 pm EST, Jan 15, 2008

I happened upon an ad today for a free calendar, and, since I didn't know the date, thought I better get one. lol

If you go to Spice Islands Main Site Link and go to "REGISTER YOUR SPICES" you can get the free calendar that I went for. Just pick a spice and say you don't have the production code if you don't have one. That is what I did- and it pulled up the form to get the free calendar.

But, while I was THERE, I found THIS page - with lots of videos that are short and sweet but highly informative on the history, geography, and uses of common spices. If you are interested in cooking atall, I think you might like this link. :)

I'm not in any way affiliated with them, just really liked the site freebie and the information and wanted to pass it to friends that are probably too busy combing the web for new tech threats to go searching after this sort of thing. ;)

When you're buried in books
Topic: Home and Garden 3:00 pm EDT, Aug 26, 2005

For the bibliophile, what to do with the books is life's central decorating issue, an ongoing discourse, a debate, and often an outright decor war, between aesthetics, the practicalities of storage and the consuming mindlessness of passion.

I've got a mere 1600 or so books here in my living room - that pales in comparision to the 20k these people are talking about. Decorating? I'm a hermit so no one sees it but my family anyway - plastic utility shelves have proved the most capable of holding the most books for me, so I have several shelves of those.

As for WHY SO MANY BOOKS - I do have a few huge personal collections that I hold as an investment. My occult book collection has about 500 volumes. I recently sold one - it brought 70.00 more than what I'd bought it for a few years ago. I didn't want it anyway.

I am an avaricious reader, but lately I've been selling my collection off, and culling it down. I am scared that the books might fall on my head one day otherwise.
