"To laugh often and much; to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." - Ralph Waldo Emerson

Virtual Surgery & More
Topic: Education 1:01 pm EST, Dec  4, 2006

This site has some great surgical simulation games. While they are supposedly for kids, the vocabulary & knowlege of A&P required is quite advanced.

I really enjoyed 'virtual hip surgery.'

6th grader Tasered at Middle School in Georgia
Topic: Georgia 6:40 pm EST, Dec  3, 2006

There's a survey on the site.

"Channel 2 was told the incident began after something happened at lunch to spark a verbal argument between two 6th graders. The verbal argument turned physical and a school resource officer with the Jonesboro Police Department says she had to resort to using a taser.

School officials confirm that an 11-year-old, 6th grade male was tasered by a school resource officer. They say the boy was physically assaulting a female 6th grader and refused to listen to verbal commands to stop. As a last resort the officer tasered the boy twice – once to get the students separated and a second time when the boy tried to attack the girl again.

The male student was taken to juvenile detention – the female was treated by emergency personnel and released to her parents.

Opinions are split on whether this kind of force should be used a school"

(I hope they consider why the students were not immediately separated & out of concurrent sight as soon as the verbal altercation started.)

Study Finds New Information About Fibromyalgia
Topic: Medicine 12:40 pm EST, Nov 30, 2006

Of course it is real. Try telling those of us that have severe fibro it isn't real. Yet, doctors want to say it ISN'T real b/c they don't know what causes it. It is the ultimate insult and failure of the medical system. It runs strongly in my family, and it is very often disabling. Totally freaking disabling, and it goes right along with the easily measurable 'idiopathic ' neuropathies that some of us lucky ones also get.

I am SO glad that the CDC is finally studying it and Chronic Fatigue. These PET tests show people with fibro have very real and strong pain responses in their brains, even to light stimuli.

"It can be difficult for patients who suffer from chronic pain to get doctors, relatives and friends to believe in their symptoms when there's no test or exam that proves their aches and pain really exist.

But scientists say overwhelming evidence has emerged in recent years that the condition fibromyalgia is real.

A new study used MRI imaging to show fibromyalgia patients have abnormalities within their brain structure. The fMRI imaging was combined with single photon emission computed tomography.

Fibromyalgia is characterized by a low-threshold for pain and associated with some genetic factors that could make some people more likely to develop the condition.

The study was led by researchers at the University of Michigan Health System and is published in the Dec. 2006 issue of Current Pain and Headache Reports.

Informant asked to LIE?

A Scandal is Brewing....

""The officers are saying one thing, the confidential informant is saying something else," Chief Pennington admitted. He has put seven officers and one sergeant from the narcotics squad on paid administrative leave while the investigation widens. Faced with the discrepency and with growing public outrage over Johnston's death, Pennington has now asked the FBI and GBI to take over the case.

The city has also released a copy of the "no knock" search warrant (view the warrant). Not only does the confidential informant now deny what it says about his alleged drug purchase at Johnston's home, but he also denies telling narcotics officers he saw security cameras around the home. Their supposed existence was one reason officers cited the need of a surprise raid. The informant is now in protective Federal custody."

An interactive map of botched SWAT and paramilitary police raids, released in conjunction with the Cato policy paper "Overkill: The Rise of Paramilitary Police Raids," by Radley Balko.

And I was concerned about tasers.

Bush appointee for family planning 'NO BIRTH CONTROL' WTF?
Topic: Politics and Law 4:41 am EST, Nov 27, 2006

"Dr. Eric Keroack
On Monday, the federal office that oversees the nation's family-planning program got a new boss who doesn't believe in birth control. Eric Keroack is a Massachusetts obstetrician-gynecologist who argues that abstinence until marriage is the only healthy choice for women. Until recently, he served as medical director of a pregnancy-counseling organization that runs down contraception and gives out scientifically false health information—for instance, that condoms "offer virtually no protection" against herpes or HPV. Keroack also promotes a wacky piece of pseudoscience: the claim that premarital sex disrupts brain chemistry so as to create a physiological barrier to happy marriage. "

Drive Through Worker gets peppersprayed in face by Cop
Topic: Civil Liberties 4:10 am EST, Nov 27, 2006

This juvenile gal is working the drivethrough when she waits on a cop. He insists that he gave her a twenty. Even after the manager checks, he doesn't believe them. He arrests and juvenile and during the process sprays her full in the face with pepperspray. Watch the full event - look what is caught on video.

This is not new, but worth watching.

He's fired, but soon gets rehired by the police force.

Now what this tells me, on a common sense level, is that even when cops are clearly wrong, you can't touch them.

USA: Excessive and lethal force? Amnesty International's concerns about deaths and ill-treatment involving police use of tasers - Amnesty International

Police are always going to side with police. That's why all these investigations don't mean crap to me what they decide.

Psych nurses, doctors, and techs deal with uncooperative, cussing, spitting people every day and don't hurt them.

What always scared me is that the techs with sadistic power trips that I fired for patient abuse almost ALWAYS got their next jobs as cops. Honest.
