``It's essentially a matter of physics...'' -- Donald Rumsfeld, Secretary of Defense

The Geography of Scotch Whisky
Topic: Recreation 10:25 am EST, Nov 25, 2004

] The rugged terrain of Scotland has enduring travel
] appeal, particularly for Americans who have so much of
] Scotland scattered across their bloodlines. There is an
] aspect of visiting Scotland that I keep with me at all
] times, before after and during a trip, and that is the
] geographically informed enjoyment of Scotch whisky.

I'm a scotch whiskey person.

I find that there are three different archetypes for appreciators of strong spirit. You have your: a) vodka person b) tequila person c) whiskey person. (Rum and Gin don't count. Rum's sole purpose is to be mixed. Gin's sole purpose is to be mixed with tonic water and a small wedge of lime.)

Anyways here's a nice starter guide to scotch whiskey. They even have a nice little map (http://www.dcs.ed.ac.uk/home/jhb/whisky/scotland.html) of scotland with the location of each distillery labeled, though it's missing both the islay and jura distilleries.

This is a trip that actors Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman took around the world on motorcycles. It's a documentary miniseries. Really interesting and not overly cheesey... The website is highly flash intensive.

I couldn't come up w/ a description of this show earlier but I think I got one. "awesome"

I don't know why but I always liked these sorts of cheesey go-around-the-world adventures. I like to call it the "white people visiting brown people" show... Their trip looks like it was hell physically and probably pushed them over the edge of insanity.

Using really destitute parts of the country as backdrops the show got great shots of Ewan and Charley on bmw motorcycles and eating MREs.

Surprising Florida Presidential Election Results

I'm not whining... But look at this. If I've learned anything from my studies in science is that numbers don't lie... yet it certainly looks like they can be manipulated.

It's not a big secret that I've spent the last 8 months working first for John Kerry for President then for Kerry-Edwards 2004. I wanted to post a thank you to everyone that supported us. This was my first political campaign of any sort. And while the ups were awesome (post super-tuesday) and the lows sucked (wednesday, Nov 3rd, at 5am) I wouldn't give up this experiance for anything. Our campaign showed that internet and politics are here to stay.

This campaign isn't John Kerry's loss as much as George Bush's win. We hit all of our numbers. We hit all of our targets, we motivated our base and got out a large part of the vote (yes I'm still bitter over the 3M 18-25'ers that registered but didn't vote). We got half the popular vote (or something reasonably close to it). They didn't blow our doors off and wrt to the EC it came down to 150k votes in OH. In a race of over 100M votes that's close to 0.1%. A very tight race indeed.

There's gonna be a shake up in the democratic party. (The -thunk- sound wednesday morning was all the power leaving the democratic party.) There will be a lot of introspection over the next year. Hopefully we can get our base together and draw strength from what we've lost this election season. I'm still a democrat. I still believe in the positive power of the federal goverment. I think health care should be available to everyone. I think that we should encourage jobs to stay in the united states. And most importantly I believe the goverment should encourage scientists and researchers to push the envelope in their fields, because more knowledge isn't a bad thing.

Yes I'm scared about our future, and I hope President Bush keeps his promise (again) to unite the country. But I'm done crying and attending "this sucks" parties. We can buck up. We will win. Fuck that guy.

CNN.com - New York Times endorses Kerry - Oct 17, 2004

] (CNN) -- The New York Times has endorsed Sen. John Kerry
] for president, calling the Democrat "a man with a strong
] moral core" who "has qualities that could be the basis
] for a great chief executive."
]
] The endorsement from one of the nation's largest and most
] influential newspapers, published in Sunday's editions
] and placed on The New York Times Web site Saturday night,
] was expected.

WTF?! Since when is a newspaper _expected_ to be openly biased?! Especially when it's supposedly the most respected one in the country?

this is a boot loader that has a built in compiler, it compiles the kernel its going to boot then boots it...

sure its a bit useless (though I'm sure someone has thought of a reason for this), but you gotta love that sort of project...
