SlugBot: Enemy of Slugs
Topic: Miscellaneous 8:11 pm EDT, Oct  9, 2001

I sware to God Decius and I came up with this idea first, only ours were going to eat people!

Immagine if we acted on it in a even slightly more serious way then creating an inside joke. sigh..

These things need to be self aware.. Its not first to market that wins the game, its best to market. And I'm going to prove it damnit.

Wired | Mitnick Warns Other 'Scapegoats'
Topic: Computer Security 10:00 pm EDT, Oct  8, 2001

""I hope Dmitry puts up a good fight," Mitnick said. "He's got a great lawyer. I had a public defender. He's innocent, I wasn't. All the right people are supporting him. I pissed a lot of the right people off by hacking into The Well.""

Acting in the new NBC crime drama, a book coming out, etc.. Milking it all for whatever its all worth, I guess. Some amusing quotes in here thou..

"Several are focusing on a letter that arrived at the company about a week before the Sept. 11 terrorist attack. It was described by sources as a ?weird love letter to Jennifer Lopez??similar, outwardly, to the types of mail the tabloids often get. But inside the oddly-worded letter was what was described as a ?soapy, powdery substance? and in the pile of that a cheap Star of David charm. The letter, per routine, was taken in by the joint mailroom of the company. Employees said the letter was handled both by Stevens and by Blanco."

And now it starts to sprial out of control..

Anthrax Uber Alles. Its going to be bigger then Amy Fisher! Bigger then Gary Condit! Bigger then OJ!

Everyone is going to want Anthrax! Its going to be the hip new thing! Anthrax on TV! Anthrax in the mail! Anthrax on your money! Anthrax at the mall!

And as far as pop-culture was concerned, up until "the end of times" started, Anthrax was just another band that went the way of the 80's. I AM THE MAN! I AM THE MAN! WE ARE GOING TO ROCK YOU LIKE A MARSHALL STACK IN THE MID 80'S BOIEEE!!!!

NewsForge | Who will watch the watchmen?
Topic: Civil Liberties 1:20 pm EDT, Oct  8, 2001

"Over decades, external and internal enemies come and go. Sometimes the government protects us from danger; sometimes it is the danger. Whenever there is a proposal to increase government surveillance power, we must judge it not solely in terms of the situation of the moment, but in terms of the whole range of situations that we have faced and will face again. We must use the government for our protection, but we must never stop protecting ourselves from it.

In the United States, we have developed a system to watch the watchmen: Judges watch them in some ways; the public watches them in other ways. For our safety, we must keep this system functioning. When the watchmen are really working for us, they can afford to let us check their work. When they ask us to stop checking, we must say no."

You knew RMS was going to pop up at some point.. I am sure we are going to see a trend where all the Open Source evangelists feed that just _have_ to say something about the terrorist attacks. Lets just hope they stick to the Civil Liberties angle. If Rob Malda tells me to donate blood I'm going to scream.

news.telegraph.co.uk - Ebola-style killer virus sweeps Afghan border
Topic: Current Events 7:21 pm EDT, Oct  3, 2001

"THE largest outbreak in history of a highly contagious disease that causes patients to bleed to death from every orifice was confirmed yesterday on Pakistan's frontier with Afghanistan."

As I update the comment here, I have to notice that I have not seen shit about this since. This shit dosen't just go away. God only knows the type of shit occuring in the refuge camps right now. And we probably woln't know until about 5 years after the conflict when we hear all about it in the left mags.

Who knows, we could have planted it so we would have less refuges to deal with. This has been your conspiracy theory of the day.(tm)

Open Source Intelligence for the masses. I have seen these folks referred to as "The private sector CIA" on CNN. Good site. I use it on a regular basis.

(In this context the words open source have nothing to do with software or intellectual property.)

Fusion power 'within reach' (BBC)

Nice to see things are moving forward. I think we are going to see great leaps in Fuel Cell technology and deployment before any Fusion power technology is viable, but the research is important.

I went to Space Camp when I was a kid. It was when I first dreamed of an orgy in 0G.
